Anglesey Invaded

Picture this, beautiful green countryside, with the mist rolling in from the sea, waves crashing on the sea shore, perfect recipe for a quiet weekend away in Anglesey, but wait there’s an extra ingredient………….approx 15 MR2’s with a good mixture of both Mk1 & Mk2, not so quiet anymore!!  4th December, the North West Regional MR2DC on their annual Christmas bash at Henllys Hall Hotel invaded Beaumaris.

Paul and I had decided to make a weekend of the trip and headed across the night before, where we had the hotel virtually to ourselves. It was the calm before the storm.

The next morning after breakfast we went on a tour of the island stopping on route for emergency ration of Alkazalsa!! The tour was done in a couple of hours. Thanks to empty roads and no tractors or Police in sight. Returning back to Beaumaris we saw a line up of MR2’s in a car park, parking up we instinctually headed for the nearest pub in search of the owners. Surprise, surprise there they were the party had begun!!

Back at the hotel, we found more of the club had arrived and were congregated in the bar discussing the hotel and whether to wear the little black number or the red (that was only the men folk.)

Dinner was to be at 7.30pm with drinks (again) in the bar at 7.00pm. Everybody hit the stairs to get changed at the same time and suffered the cold shower/bath syndrome. Mark managed to use his charm to persuade Pauline and Suzanne to let him use their bath “My room only has a shower” was the excuse. Did anybody actually see if that was true!!

We weren’t the only people having a Christmas bash at the hotel, the Mason’s were in the bar for the pre-dinner drinks so lots of funny handshaking going on (well I hope think it was handshaking). Needless to say we were prompt into the dinning room.

Great fun and frivolities started at the tables with the party hats, screaming balloons and party poppers. Some of us had more fun than others!!!

I think the majority managed to eat their meals without getting too many balloons landing in the soup or getting a mouthful of streamers mixed up with the veg – those of us who ate our veg that is (You know who you are!!!!!!).

Meal complete and Phil’s speech FINALLY finished, we headed back to the bar (yes again) where the disco was about to start. As you can imagine things (or should I say people) slowly went down hill from here. Plenty more drinks were had and the dancing began. Thankfully there was no Birdie Song or Agadoo, but we all joined in for YMCA, Grease Lightning and of course the Conga.

At around 1.30am the numbers had dwindled and for many so had the legs. Climbing the stairs to our rooms was a great task, but finally accomplished. The final revelers were thrown out of the bar at about 2.30am.

The agenda for the next day was a tour round the island, taking in a stop to buy toys to donate to the  Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral. While everyone went to pack and check out Paul  polished the rain off the car and in the process kept setting the warning alarm on Chris Lloyd’s car (which everyone but Chris and partner seemed to hear). Paul didn’t however take up the offer to polish all the other cars though.

Once packed and checked out we finally set off and headed straight for the toyshop.  Moe kindly designated us a boy or a girl as we went in and then all hell let loose. I don’t know who was having more fun the few kids that were in there or us adults. Of course it was all the noisy toys we found first.

About an hour later we set off with gifts for a drive round Anglesey.  It didn’t take us too long to loose four cars (as soon as we pulled away from the toyshop!!!!) but the rest managed to stay together. No too difficult really if you’ve ever been to Anglesey, you’ll know there is only one circular road all the way round. Unfortunately for some reason the roads seemed busier than the previous day and all the Sunday drivers were out in force readily sticking bellow the speed limit, now that’s no way to drive specially when you have 11 MR2’s behind you!!!. At the first possible moment Paul decided to put his foot down and over take as many in the convoy as possible showing off the shooting flames from the exhaust along the way!!! (Does anyone have an answer to that problem?? Paul doesn’t seem to think it is one hmmmmm? Boys!!!!)

Grand Prix around Anglesey done (or should I say Tortoise Race) the convoy headed off to Arrowe Park Hospital (picking up a missing car on the way!). We weren’t quite the Three Wise Kings bearing gifts, but the Ward Sister welcomed us with arms open!

A Big Thanks to Moe & Phil for all their efforts in making our Christmas do so excellent.  A good time was had by all.   Lets hope the event’s are as good in 2000!!!
